Maha Shivratri | MahaShivratri
09.23.04 (12:20 pm)   [edit]
When is Maha Shivratri in 2005 or 2005 Maha Shivratri? Maha Shivratri 2005 is on March 8.
Maha Shivratri is Celebrated by Hindus all over India, Shivratri is a solemn festival devoted to the worship of the most powerful deities of the Hindu pantheon, Shiva. It is purely religious festival at which Shiva temples as at Chidambaram, Kalahasi, Khajuraho and Varanasi. MahaShivratri occurs on the 14th night of the new moon during the dark half of the month of Phalguna. This is the night when he is said to have performed the Tandava or the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction.

Worship of Shiva is to release the worshipper from the cycle of birth and rebirth. Devotees of Shiva fast during the day and maintain a long vigil during the night. In temples all across the country, bells ring, sacred texts are chanted and traditional offerings of leaves and milk are made to the Shiv lingam, the phallic symbol of the god. There is a legend behind Shiva's phallic form.

Indian Christmas celebration
09.23.04 (12:18 pm)   [edit]
A fine and exhilarating distillation of traditional and local influences, Christmas is observed in much splendour at services in churches and cathedrals, and festivity in carol singing, dances and balls.

Christmas Day, Indian Christians celebrate the birth of christ in much the same way as in the west; many churches hold services/mass at midnight. There is an air of peace during the season and festivity in city markets. Which are specially decorated and illuminated.

Among the most joyous and colourful celebrations are the festivities at Goa which retain the pageantry of the Latin temper brought to a brilliant culmination under an Indian sun.

The month of fasting for the muslims

Fasting is one of the unique, moral and spiritual characteristics of Islam. By the introduction of this matchless institution, Islam has planted an evergrowing tree of infinite virtues and valuable products. The main reason for the fast is to inculcate within the hearts of Muslims, resemblance of being Samad, one the attributes of Allah. It means that a Muslim should be independent of all needs.

The spirit of the observer of a fast is released from the clutches of desires and temptations and thus the goal of purification of the soul and eternal felicity can be acquired . It aims at curtailing the intensity of evil passions of a man and restraining his organs from turning towards those things which may caused havoc in his spiritual life. Fasting is the bridle of the God-conscious, the sheild of the crusaders and an effective means of discipline. It guards against indulgence in evil deeds. It is most efficacious for the reformation of the heart, which is an essential factor to develop good qualities like piety, single-minded devotion, repentance and inner tranquility. The observer of the fast should refrain from excessive eating, unnecessary conversation and volubility which are likely to upset his composure and serenity and make him drift from the straight path.

Fasting strenghtens man's morality and self-control and deepens in him the consciousness of the Lord. The underlying idea behind this is to impart moral training . It does not train a person for complete renunciation but for and cheerful obedience to Allah. Islam has laid down various injunctions for the performance of this obligation. The real spirit of fasting demands of us that we should strictly follow all regulations pertaining to it for the attainment of perfection in fasting.

Makara Sankranti | Pongal
09.23.04 (12:13 pm)   [edit]
When is Makar Sankranti in 2005 or when is Makara Sankranti 2005? Makar Sankranti 2005 is on Jan. 13.
This holy day marks the commencement of the Sun's northern course in the Heavens, known as the Uttaraayana patha. This turn in the Sun's course takes place at the point of time when it enters the sign of Makara or Capricorn. Interestingly, this is the only festival in Hindu calendar that follows a solar calendar and is celebrated on the fourteenth of January every year (all other Hindu festivals are computed using the lunar calendar).

Wishing Happy Sankranti to neighbors and visitors

Sankranti is termed as Pongal in Tamilnadu, and is celebrated with a popular dish with the same name. Kolams (Rangoli) and prayers constitute the celebration of the festival. People buy new clothes, ornaments, sugarcane and sweet candy for the festival. The farmers worship their harvested crops and share with friends and relatives. Women and young girls wear new clothes, wear golden and silver ornaments, volunteer different flowers and visit their relatives and friends.

In different parts of India, the Sankranti is celebrated very differently. On the Western parts, the emphasis is on exchanging Til-Gul which is a specialty of Konkani/Marathi women. It is sugar coated seeds and nuts of different colors prepared by the housewives. In some other parts, exchange a mixture of teel, jaggery, fried gram, groundnuts (peanuts) which is called "Ellu Bella.". Along with sweets, flowers, bangles, dry fruits, sugarcane, sugar cadies are also exchanged. In the old Mysore region, people decorate their houses and cattle. They also worship their crop and cattle. As part of the celebration they sing and dance, and look forward for flowering of the trees and singing of birds.

In Hindu belief, a person dying on this auspicious day directly goes to the heaven. Bhishma, an elder in the epic of Mahabharata, is said to have waited for this day to breathe his last. It is also on this day every twelve years the Great Kumbh-Mela is held at Prayag.

Holi Festival: Festival of color
09.23.04 (12:07 pm)   [edit]
When is holi 2005? Holi 2005 is on March 25.
The colorful festival of Holi is celebrated in most parts of India during February-March (in the month of Phalguna according to the Hindu calendar). The celebrations vary depending on region and local traditions but the common part is exchange of colors.

Legends of Holi

Holika was an aunt of a boy named Prahlad, who died in the fire arguing against her king brother Hiranyakashipu who had declared himself as God. In her honor, an effigy of Holika is burnt in a bonfire in some parts of India.
Holi was also the day when Kama, the God of Love disturbed Lord Shiva's meditation and was burnt down by Shiva. An effigy of Kama is burnt in some parts of India on the day of the Holi festival.
Holi was also the name of a female demon Putana who tried to kill boy Krishna, by giving him her poisoned nipples to suckle. The miracle boy Krishna is said to have sucked so intensely that he drained the demon of her life. Hence the biggest celebration of Holi takes place at Mathura.
Celebrations

On the day of the Holi, people (men and women) irrespective of caste and creed mingle together and exchange colors. The celebrations can get wild and rowdy -- it is one of the few occasions of the year that the sexes are allowed to mix freely. People use tools and tricks to spray, paint and drown friends and relatives in color as the accompanying picture exhibit will demonstrate.
