[b]When is Karva Chauth in 2005[/b]? [b]Karva Chauth 2004[/b] is on [b]20th October[/b]. Karva Chauth is celebrated by married women (Suhagani) on fourth day of the of the dark moon exactly nine days before Diwali. It is celebrated with fervor mainly in Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. This fast is undertaken by the women for the well being of their husbands. Karwa chauth is the time when husbands give gifts to wife.
The 'Karva Chauth' is more important for all newly married girls. They wear new clothes and apply mehendi on this day. Women who successfully observe Karva Chauth are said to achieve saubhagya (prosperity). It is believed that Lord Krishna urged Draupadi to observe this vrat which would enable Arjuna to emerge victorious during the war with Kauravas in Kurukshetra. Women wake up early on this day and have a bath before daybreak. After that, they begin vrat (fast) till the evening. Then they break the fast after having a bath. Mother-in-law buys sargi (sweetmeats and clothes) for her daughter-in-law. While the newly wed girls give bayas (almonds, maithris and other knick-knacks) to their in-laws.
